gm music fans.
Music NFTs are getting some mainstream attention this week with a high-profile Michael Jackson drop and a Coinbase music quest driving thousands of new users to onchain music. Let’s jump straight into the biggest stories of the week.
Ziggy Ziggy Season 3 is powered by Beatport.io.
We love an NFT that gives you real-life benefits. The Kinship Club Edition NFT on Beatport.io right now gives you free access to any HE.SHE.THEY club event around the world in 2024 (a huge discount considering the club events are usually $70 entry). Music, visual art and utility. We love to see it.
Onchain music headlines this week
1. Jackson 5 NFTS?
Michael Jackson’s first ever studio take will be immortalised onchain next week in a unique drop via Anotherblock. An unreleased version of Jackson 5’s debut single “Big Boy” will go on sale on December 7th, including the isolated stems of Michael Jackson’s vocal — the first time he ever recorded into a mic. Anotherblock also has a string of “digital vinyl” releases lined up including a limited edition drop from Galantis. (Read more).
2. Coinbase music NFT quest
Coinbase just launched its first music “quest.” Coinbase Wallet users can collect one of five tracks on Sound.xyz and earn $10 OP as a reward. It features tracks from some of Web3’s leading artists: TK, Sara Philips, Annika Rose, Beachcrimes and Xcelencia. So far, more than 17,000 new users have collected a music NFT. You can get involved here by following the prompts. [Disclosure: we helped work on this campaign].
3. Music collectibles in Roblox?
Independent record label Monstercat has been rolling out a series of digital collectibles on Roblox’s UGC platform with consistent sellouts and record sales. This week they dropped a digital “boombox” which contains music from the label. Fans and gamers can also unlock 30 extra songs by paying to upgrade the boombox.
This whole campaign has been fascinating to me because the demand for digital items is clearly huge in Roblox, but they are not NFTs. (Read more).
4. Music NFT battles
A new startup Nifty Tunes has launched on Solana, allowing artists to drop music in a competitive way with ‘battle drops.’ The first one just went live with Web3 regulars Sara Philips and Eman8. (Read more).
5. Builders keep building
Zora enabled easier uploads, allowing artists to mint their work with no crypto or wallet required. (Read more).
Bonfire launched membership passes so artists and music brands can easily start a community. (Read more).
Supercollector launched Supercollector Radio to help you discover music from the platform. (Read more).
Biggest drop of the week
Songcamp C4
Songcamp is one of the pioneers of the Web3 music space, best known for Chaos Packs — a collection that featured 77 artists and generated more than $400k volume in 2022. They’re back this week with a new project, featuring 15 artists across five tracks, each can be ‘pressed’ onto CDs, all onchain via Zora. Listen and mint here.
