Gm music fans,
Here’s everything you need to know in Web3 music this week.
1. Def Jam enters Web3
Legendary hip-hop label Def Jam just announced a new virtual NFT band, The Whales.
It’s made up of characters from the Catalina Whale Mixer project - a collection of 5,555 whale avatars on the Solana blockchain.
A full length album is coming soon.
2. Make money from sharing music?
sound.xyz launched ‘curator rewards’ allowing music fans to make money from sharing music.
Share a referral link to a primary sale on sound.xyz and get a 5% cut of any sales generated.
We tested it out at Ziggy Ziggy and it works!
One tweet generated three sales and we made a small commission. This opens up a potential new revenue stream for fans, street teams, blogs and curators.
3. Web3 job opportunity at Warner Records UK
Warner Record is looking for a Web3 lead to join its London office (they’re also considering remote applicants).
The Warner team launched two flagship NFT projects last year (Stickmen Toys and Probably a Label) and pioneered Muse’s number 1 album with a chart-compatible NFT.
4. Rihanna drop sells out (trading at high premium)
A few weeks ago we highlighted an NFT drop that shared streaming royalties in Rihanna’s track “Bitch Better Have My Money.”
The collection of 300 sold immediately this week and last changed hands at 1.3 ETH ($1,976). Two words of caution on this one:
This drop is not endorsed by Rihanna - it came from a producer who has credits on the track.
Trading at 1.3 ETH is a high premium if you extrapolate out the streaming royalties you can expect so please exercise caution.
5. Personalised drop pages on Zora
Throwback to the MySpace era?
You can now create a customised drop page on Zora using your own branding and images.
Check out how Sound of Fractures customised their latest drop and read how to do it here.
6. Get a $5k creator grant
Reveel is a Web3 tool for splitting revenue on chain between artists and collaboratots. They just announced a creator grant up to $5,000.
How to apply?
Make a collaborative song, mint it on decent.xyz and use Reveel to split the revenue between the artists. Submissions are open from February 20th.
7. The gold standard of nft fan clubs got an upgrade
Jagwar Twin has one of the best interactive, gamified fan clubs called House of Mirrors. Built by the team at Cthdrl, it’s powered by NFTs and Web3 rewards.
This week it got a big upgrade. If you’re interested in building out a Web3 fan club, I highly recommend learning more about the House of Mirrors project.
8. Iman Europe launches artist DAO
Iman Europe is an artist at the heart of Web3 music (and head of artist relations at sound.xyz).
She just launched The Homies - a DAO for artists to connect and collaborate with a focus on health and wellness.
That’s all for this week. Did we miss anything? Let me know @musicben_eth on Twitter.
